On Friday night I attended the Mediterranean Paleo Cooking book signing at the Steven's Creek Barnes & Noble in San Jose to see Diane Sanfilippo, Caitlin Weeks and Chef Nabil Boumrar. I am a huge fan of Diane's and I was excited they added a few more tour dates since I missed the San Francisco signing a few months back.
I arrived early to the event so I could buy a copy of Practical Paleo, which was Diane's first book and is one of the top go-to "Paleo textbooks". As I was walking to the register to buy my book, I ran into Diane as she was arriving. I had a total fan girl moment, not sure what to say but I managed to squeak out "I'm so excited!!". Nerd.
After I made my purchase I sat down and waited for the event to start. Caitlin and Nabil arrived then they three of them kicked off the talk by introducing themselves and talking about how they got started with a real foods lifestyle. Diane and Caitlin talked about their days hanging out in SF and attending Bauman College in Berkeley to get their Nutritional Therapy Consultant certifications. Caitlin and Nabil are married, and his explanation of how he met Diane was hilarious. He said he didn't meet Diane in person for about a year, he just knew she was the girl who Caitlin had over to the house who always ate his food.
Long before becoming a professional chef in SF, Nabil grew up in Algeria in a large family. His mother's recipes were a big inspiration for Mediterannean Paleo Cooking. Nabil was the mastermind behind the recipes in the book, and Caitlin and Diane helped tweak the recipes the make them Paleo-approved. Additionally, they added AIP and other modifications. They talked about the sections of the book and some of the recipes, then it was time for Q&A.
During the Q&A portion, Diane, Caitlin and Nabil answered questions about Mediterannean Paleo Cooking, Practical Paleo and general questions about Paleo/real food. About the new book, they answered questions about cookware the recipe's suggest and their favorite recipes. One of the recipes I am now dying to try is the Fig and Ginger Chicken Tajine (Cook Eat Paleo wrote a review and posted the recipe with permission, found here). Diane answered various questions about eating Paleo, the AIP protocol and becoming a nutritional therapy practitioner.
After the Q&A, it was time for signing and pictures. I was stoked to get my new copy of Practical Paleo signed. The best part? Diane signed it "Love & bacon, Diane".
I am glad I attended this quick and fun event. Diane, Caitlin and Nabil are a hilarious trio and they are very proud of their new book (rightfully so-- it is a masterpiece). Mediterranean Paleo Cooking is next on my list of cookbooks to pick up. I suggest you check it out, too!
